Communication Assessment

Understand your communication style through the Johari Window framework. This assessment measures how openly you share information (Exposure) and how actively you seek input from others (Feedback Seeking), plus how your style adapts across organizational hierarchy.

The Johari Window

Developed by psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham, the Johari Window maps communication effectiveness across four quadrants:

Feedback seeking
Known by Self
Unknown by Self
Exposure
Known by
Others
Unknown by
Others
ARENA Shared Understanding
BLIND SPOT Unrecognized Reality
FACADE Hidden or Avoided
UNKNOWN Unrealized Potential

The goal: expand your Arena (open communication area) through balanced Exposure and Feedback Seeking.

4 Communication Styles

Type A: Reserved

Low Exposure, Low Feedback. Minimal sharing and inquiry. Large Unknown region.

Type B: Inquiring

Low Exposure, High Feedback. Seeks perspectives but shares little. Large Facade.

Type C: Assertive

High Exposure, Low Feedback. Shares freely but doesn't seek input. Large Blind Spot.

Type D: Open

High Exposure, High Feedback. Balanced sharing and inquiry. Large Arena (optimal).

Power Sensitivity

A unique feature of the Communication Assessment: it measures how your communication style shifts across organizational hierarchy.

  • Upward adaptation: How your style changes when communicating with superiors
  • Downward adaptation: How your style changes with direct reports (managers only)
  • Pattern classification: Consistent, Hierarchically Sensitive, Upward Guarded, Democratically Open, or Inverted

Understanding power sensitivity helps leaders build psychological safety and authentic communication at all levels.

Bilingual: English & Spanish

The Communication Assessment is fully bilingual (English/Spanish), including all items, instructions, reports, and email communications. This makes it ideal for organizations with multilingual workforces.

Role-Adaptive Design

The assessment adapts based on the respondent's role:

  • Individual contributors: 26-30 items, 10-12 minutes (upward/lateral adaptation only)
  • Managers/Leaders: 30-34 items, 12-15 minutes (includes downward adaptation measurement)
